TAKING CARE OF YOUR SILVER

It is natural for silver jewellery to tarnish when it is exposed to air and moisture. Since pure silver is a very soft metal, it is alloyed with copper/ other metals to make it malleable for crafting jewellery. It is the other metals, primarily copper, that tarnish sterling silver. Copper reacts to the moisture and sulphur in the air, causing sterling silver to become dull. Silver tarnishes faster in areas with high humidity and air pollution. Avoid using perfume, hairspray, nail polish removers, chlorinated/ salt water or other cleaning agents, as they can speed up the tarnishing process. However, in case your jewellery does get tarnished, fret not. It’s only on the surface and can easily be cleaned with a silver polishing cloth.

To prevent silver from getting tarnished, follow our handy guide:

  1. Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place. Silver tarnishes faster when it comes in contact with air and moisture. We recommend that you keep your silver jewellery in an air tight zip lock bag or a plastic container. Each piece should be kept separately so that the surface does not get scratched. Change your plastic bags every few months or when you see that the colour of the bag has turned cloudy.

  2. Use a professional silver polishing cloth to clean it occasionally. The cloth is treated with cleaning chemicals and lends a brilliant shine to jewellery. Rub the cloth gently in one direction, taking care not to damage the jewellery. Silver is a soft metal; be gentle with earring posts and clasps, as they can bend or break under excessive force. Gemstones can also scratch, crack or chip if dropped.

  3. Store your silver with an anti-tarnish strip in a ziplock bag/ plastic container to keep the tarnish at bay.

  4. Do not dip the jewellery in any kind of solution. Most of our jewellery pieces are traditional Indian designs, and a special oxidised finish is given to the products to enhance the design. Dipping jewellery in anykind of silver solution can cause the original design to get distorted. Dipping solutions can also damage gemstones and beads.

  5. Do not wear your silver jewellery when taking a shower, entering a swimming pool or a spa.

  6. Don't leave your jewellery in the bathroom, on the dressing table or anywhere else where it may be exposed to air and moisture.

  7. Do not spray perfume, hairspray, or any other chemicals on the jewellery.

  8. Take off your jewellery before going to bed. You don’t want to get up the next morning with a damaged pair of silver earrings.

  9. Do not use toothpaste / toothpowder or any other home remedies to clean your silver.
